湯川秀樹(1907-1981)誕生於東京。當量子力學於1920年代在歐洲成形之際,湯川逐漸確立對理論物理的興趣與方向。1935年,他提出「介子理論」,預測存在於原子核之間的中介粒子,用以解釋質子和中子(核子)之間的強相互作用。1947年,「π介子」在宇宙線中被發現,證實湯川的理論。湯川因此榮獲1949年諾貝爾物理學獎,成為日本首位獲獎的物理學家,對現代粒子物理學的發展具有奠基性的影響。
同時,粒子標準模型中以湯川命名的「Yukawa作用項」,是解析粒子質量起源的關鍵。湯川也創辦了英文期刊Progress of Theoretical Physics(《理論物理進展》),培育日本新一代物理學家,推動戰後的日本重返國際科學界。
另一方面,湯川生於學養深厚的家庭,自幼接受嚴謹的漢學教育,誦讀《論語》與《孟子》,學習書法,稍長涉獵《老子》、《莊子》和各國文學譯著,孕育出兼具科學理性與人文精神的特質。

Hideki Yukawa (1907–1981), born in Tokyo, was a towering figure in theoretical physics. In 1935, he proposed the meson theory, predicting a particle that mediates the "nuclear force" holding together the protons and neutrons inside the atomic nucleus. This groundbreaking work was experimentally confirmed in 1947, when Cecil Frank Powell discovered the π-meson in cosmic rays. In 1949, Yukawa became the first Japanese Nobel Laureate, a milestone that revitalized Japan's presence in the global scientific community.
His "Yukawa interaction" term is a fundamental pillar of the Standard Model, playing a fundamental role in explaining how fermions acquire mass. Yukawa also founded the English-language journal Progress of Theoretical Physics to cultivate a new generation of Japanese physicists, propelling postwar Japan's return to the international scientific community.
At the same time, raised in a family with a deep scholarly tradition, Yukawa was immersed in classical Chinese learning, Daoist philosophy, and world literature from a young age.

In 1935, Hideki Yukawa published a paper proposing that the force between nucleons could be explained through the exchange of a new particle, whose existence he predicted as the meson. Twelve years later, the discovery of the pion provided crucial experimental evidence for the theory. The meson theory not only earned Yukawa the Nobel Prize in Physics but also laid an important foundation for research on nuclear forces and the development of postwar particle physics.

An Upbringing Shaped by Science and the Humanities

湯川秀樹成長於學術氣息濃厚的家庭。父親小川琢治為地質學家,長兄小川芳樹專攻冶金學,次兄貝塚茂樹則研究中國古代史。幼年時,他亦隨外祖父研習並背誦漢學經典。自然科學與傳統人文交織的成長環境,為他日後兼具科學探索、人文思考與社會關懷的生命歷程奠定了基礎。

Hideki Yukawa grew up in a family with a strong scholarly tradition. His father, Takuji Ogawa, was a geologist; his eldest brother, Yoshiki Ogawa, specialized in metallurgy, while his second-eldest brother, Shigeki Kaizuka, studied ancient Chinese history. As a child, Yukawa also studied and memorized the Chinese classics under the guidance of his maternal grandfather. This upbringing, in which the natural sciences and traditional humanities were closely intertwined, laid the foundation for a life marked by scientific inquiry, humanistic reflection, and concern for society.

The NCCU Edition: Exhibition Background

「湯川秀樹:粒子物理大師的人文世界—政大站」承清華大學文物館策劃與協力,並由台灣聯合大學系統促成,將谷川雅夫教授捐贈予清華大學之湯川秀樹及其家族與親友墨跡,移展至政治大學達賢圖書館特藏中心展出。

本次移展延續清華大學文物館原展主軸,共借展28件作品,分為三個單元:
「家學與知交:學者之脈,文人之風」以湯川家族與親友的書跡為主,呈現其家學淵源與人際網絡。
「性情中的湯川:以詩書觀宇宙」展出湯川的和歌與山水畫作,映照其以詩書筆墨觀照自然與人生的精神世界。
「入世的湯川:以和平為志業」則聚焦湯川戰後對和平運動的投入,展現其反思戰爭經驗後,對世界和平與人類未來的深切關懷。

作為以人文社會科學見長的大學,政大長期重視知識傳承、公共關懷與跨領域對話。本展在延續原展主軸的基礎上,進一步加入政大視角,從典藏圖書、期刊論文與史料出發,回望湯川的學術影響、思想脈絡與時代關懷。透過科學與人文、典藏與研究、歷史與當代之間的相互映照,讓知識在校際、學科與時代之間展開新的連結。

Planned and supported by the NTHU Heritage Museum and facilitated by the University System of Taiwan (UST), the exhibition Hideki Yukawa: Humanistic World of a Master of Particle Physics— NCCU Edition brings the calligraphy of Hideki Yukawa, his family, and friends—generously donated by Professor Masao Tanigawa to NTHU—to the Special Collection Center of the Dah Hsian Seetoo Library at National Chengchi University (NCCU). Carrying forward the core narrative of the original exhibition, this traveling edition features 28 loaned artworks divided into three thematic sections:

Family Heritage and Kindred Scholars: A Lineage of Learning, A Circle of Literati
Displaying calligraphy, manuscripts, and paintings by Yukawa’s family members and his associates, demonstrating the intellectual network that shaped Yukawa's mind.

Yukawa as Poet-Scientist: A Universe Seen Through Verse and Brush
Showcasing his waka poetry and landscape paintings—a reflection of his contemplation of the universe through brush and ink.

Toward One World: Yukawa's Lifelong Pursuit of Peace
Highlighting Yukawa's works on postwar commitment to global peace movements and his profound sense of social responsibility.

As a university distinguished in the humanities and social sciences, NCCU has long championed the transmission of knowledge, civic engagement, and interdisciplinary dialogue. Building upon the foundation of the original exhibition, this iteration introduces the NCCU Perspective. By drawing upon library collections, academic journals, and historical archives, it revisits Yukawa's academic influence, intellectual trajectory, and his profound response to his era. Through the dynamic interplay between science and the humanities, collections and research, as well as the historical and the contemporary, this exhibition forges new connections of knowledge across institutions, disciplines, and eras.
